ATC Biennial Meeting

Despite the very hot, rainy weather, several CMC members attended the 32nd biennial meeting of the Appalachian Trail Conference July 9-16 at Radford University, Radford, VA. It was an informative meeting, with nearly 1,000 in attendance. The next meeting will be 2001 at Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, PA. Vermont will host in 2003, and the Deep South (that’s us) will be the host in 2005. This gives us plenty of time to make sure our sections of the AT and surrounding trails will be at the absolute best, so everyone will enjoy this beautiful part of the country.

In Memoriam

Nancy Hawley, a long time CMC member, hike leader, and council member died suddenly on July 30, 1999, after a brief illness. A memorial service was held at her home on August 12, 1999. We will all miss Nancy for the person she was, and the contributions she made to the club. We offer our condolences to her family.

Edward Rigby, 93, a member of CMC from 1972 to 1997 died June 27,1999, following a period of declining health. We offer our sympathy to his family.

Council Meeting

President McDonald appointed Curt Holliday to fill the vacant council position created by the unexpected death of Nancy Hawley. He will serve until the end of 1999. The next council meeting is November 8th at the Mills River Restaurant. Dinner at 6:00 P.M. meeting at 7:00 P.M. Open to all members, but please call Howard at 6938258 or Ellie Thrush at 6979743 for dinner reservations.

Proposed Awards

Ed Smith has proposed the creation of two annual awards. The CMC President’s Award: chosen by the club president for person(s) who made significant contribution to CMC operation during the past twelve months. The CMC Club Award: chosen by the council for person(s) who made significant longterm contributions to achieving the club’s mission. Please bring, or send your ideas to the next council meeting.

Proposed ByLaw Changes

Three proposed changes in the club by-laws will be voted on at the annual meeting on Nov. 5th. Please read the insert and be prepared to vote your preference. ( See Proposed Bylaw Changes below on this page)

Sara Davis Honored

Our very own Sara Davis was awarded Honorary Membership to the ATC for her many years of service to the conference at the biennial meeting in July. Congratulations, Sara!

Bob Johnson Defection!

Bob, who has done so much good work for the club in different capacities, decided earlier this year to return to New Hampshire to be closer to his sons. This took away from the club a tremendous amount of knowledge and ability I think he should box and send back to us! We will miss him, and look forward to his return visits – Howard
