Bill Kirkman, one of our most ardent hikers, and a 50-year member of CMC, passed away on June 6, 2000.
He had hiked with the club almost continuously since he returned from serving in the US Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was a quiet, unassuming man who had a vast knowledge of the history of Asheville and could tell many tales about people and events that had taken place in the areas of our hikes.
He loved to discuss topics related to world events, geography and history, and was “sharp as a tack” right up to his death at age 87.
Most of the senior hikers will remember Bill as a gentle, intelligent, interesting and dedicated hiker whom we valued as a friend. Our sympathy goes to his nieces and nephews. We will miss Bill.
