Weekend Trail

Maintenance

We have had a Saturday Trail Work Day each quarter for a year now and the response has been incredibly good. The first quarter of this year, we had 17 people, with many of these coming forward to adopt sections of the MST. A Big Thank You to all for making this a success!

Our regular meeting place is now the Moose Cafe at the Farmer’s Market at 8:00 a.m. If you want to skip breakfast, we leave there at 9:00 and work until 3:30. The purpose is education of what is involved in trail maintenance and to have fun. The next work day will be in September. Call Les Love at 658-1489 for details.

Summer Trail

Precautions

While hiking in the summertime, there are certain precautions to take. In addition to the regular items in each hiker’s first aid kit, personal medication for allergy to bee sting should be included. July, August and September are prime months when bees are protecting their nests. These are usually in the trail or on the side of it. Benadryl should be in every kit and can be purchased over the counter. Be aware of ticks on the hike and examine yourself afterwards. The deer tick can be as small as a poppy seed or the head of a pin.

Carry extra water and be on guard against dehydration. Many hikers are allergic to posion ivy, which is prominent on some trails. Enjoy your hike, but don’t forget the Ivy Block, sun screen, and moleskin.

Annual Meeting
Friday November 3, 2000

It is appropriate at this time to honor John W. Davis (Jack), a former workhorse in Carolina Mountain Club in the years from 1968 to 1996. Jack and Evelyn moved to Asheville in the summer of 1967 and started hiking with the Club soon afterwards. Jack became a maintainer and made his last work trip in 1996.

Jack was elected president of CMC in 1972 and served for two years. He worked with Arch Nichols to persuade the U.S. Forest Service to acquire land at Max Patch Mountain and spearheaded the effort of the AT relocation at Max Patch. This included innovative use of a local mule for construction of sidetrail through rhododendron. He participated in the construction of the Flint Mountain, Hogback Ridge, and Roaring Fork Shelters. Jack’s most important accomplishment for CMC was implementing the current system for trail maintenance into sections, each with its own maintainer.

With all his other duties, Jack served as a regular hike leader. He helped organize and lead CMC hiking, backpacking, and canoe trips to Gila Wilderness, Okeefenokee Swamp, Suwanee River, Little Pee Dee River, Lumber River, Edisto River, and Cumberland Island.

From 1979 to 1983, Jack served on the Board of Managers of the Appalachian Trail Conference and as a member and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (Highlands of Roan) from 1974-1977 and NC Trails Advisory Committee.

A man of many hats, Jack was also very active as president of the North Asheville Community Club, treasurer of Mountain Ramparts Health Planning Agency, University Botanical Gardens, Buncombe County Council on Aging, AARP, and Meals on Wheels.

In 1977, Evelyn was stricken with Alzheimers Disease. Jack cared for her at home for 10 years. After moving Evelyn to a nursing home for nine years, he fed her meals twice daily and assisted other residents as well.

At the age of 75, he took a 120-hour course at A-B Tech and became a Certified Nursing Assistant so he could work at Aston Park caring for Eveyln and other residents. Currently, Jack lives at Highland Farms, Black Mountain, NC.
