CMC Bi-Weekly Trail Maintenance News May 17, 2006 Maintenance News.... New Maintenance ReportsVery good day today. Lemon Gap was never more beautiful in early spring, exhibiting new-greens of the season, light breeze and all under a Carolina blue sky (Go Tarheels!). We had a good eight out today and missed a few of our regulars of course. However, we are well into the destruction of the old and venerable eight man Appalachian Trail shelter at Roaring Fork Creek. The top is off and all nails are removed from some very handsome wood (1X3's sheeting), as well as large joists, and other boards. Two of the large top logs are down and waiting the chainsaws next week. We appointed Mr. Poe his first executive job of his trail crew career, asking him to oversee the Roaring Fork Creek privy disposal team of John Whitehouse and Bill Carr. While a very difficult and technical challenge, his team performed in the manner expected of a Wednesday Crew "sub-team" and exhibited the highest of standards and teamwork in making this famous structure vanish into thin air (or at least the air at 3,600 feet). Outstanding job guys and thanks to Mr. Poe for his leadership. So, the privy is no more and most of the hard work is past for the large structure. We removed a blow-down and three snags along the short hike into the shelter site. Hope for good weather next week. Actually one of the most fun days we've had and a great change of pace. The only complainants were the "shelter mice" who may know by now that there condo at Roaring Fork is soon to be dust. We'll make sure that they are on the right path to set up house in the new shelter 3.5 miles south. Good day today guys and thanks. Official report follows.
