Maintenance News....

From a letter to the eNews

I hike almost weekly during the colder months in Green River Games Lands with my dog, Mattie. I was on the trails 4 days after the ice storm and needless to say the entire area was a disaster. I have been hiking for the past several weeks in Green River. All the trails have been cleared and the beauty has returned. I just wish to thank the guys with the Carolina Mountain Club for all your hard work in Green River.
Also, hiking Friday on Bear Branch Trail I found a pair of grey work goves, size XL;. probably belonging to one of your crew members. If anyone one wants to claim them, have then give me a call, or email me at jrlf@tds.net. Ph:749-1053.
Thanks again, Jim Rezac

Mountains-to-Sea Trail News – April 2006 - www.ncmst.org

Dear FMST,

April 29-30, 2006 – Marion, NC- Bald Knob MST Workday – Come put the finishing touches on this section of the MST.  All of the trip detail information is posted at – http://www.ncmst.org/baldknob.htm  Help us get this section ready for designation and spring hiking.  You will need to RSVP for this event to Allen de Hart – 919-496-4771 or adh4771@aol.com

May 6, 2006 – We will designate and cut the ribbon on the MST section from North Fork of the Catawba River to the Pinnacle (edge of Linville Gorge Wilderness) for a total of 10.6 miles  This will also include the 200 foot bridge across the North Fork of the Catawba River as well.  The FMST secured $227,000 dollars of grant money to make this bridge possible in conjunction with the US Forest Service.  This trail segment links 210 continuous miles of the MST as a natural surface hiking trail in the western part of the state.  The ceremony will start at 10:00 AM for speeches and recognitions of this achievement at Woodlawn Picnic area off NC-221 outside of Marion, NC.  We will then move to the bridge site for a picnic lunch and then host a hike to the top of Bald Knob.  The hike to the top of Bald Knob is 6 miles with 37 switchbacks to the top – a very strenuous hike for the average hiker. The 360 degree views of Linville Gorge, Lake James, and the Black Mountains are the rewards at the top of Bald Knob.
