Looking for Pictures of the MST

Gerry McNabb and Walt Weber are preparing a slide show for use at Diamond Brand and other locales to introduce our Revised MST book coming out this fall.

They would like to have some good MST shots to include in the show, including work photos of building the trail.

Just send a few of your favorites to me at my currently empty contest mailbox. The address is contestmcnabb@charter.net (even though this is not a contest). Gerry McNabb

Bike Trip on the Greenbrier Trail in West Virginia - Oct. 9 - 12

Several CMC members that bike are considering a bike trip to the Greenbrier (Rails-to-Trails) trail in West Virginia. We are scheduling it for Oct 9th thru 12th. It is approximately a 7 hour drive one way. See http://www.greenbrierrivertrail.com/

We would leave on Fri. 9th and return Mon. 12th. The trail is 80 miles in length. Lodging is available and we will be looking into various facilities. As soon as I have several commitments I will arrange lodging. At this time I do not have any deadline to commit for the trip. I hope to make some tentative lodging arrangements within the next week or two. If you are interested please let me know as soon as possible by e-mail to carrollkoepp@bellsouth.net . Forest Service to Allow Boating on the Chattooga River
     From the Asheville Citizen-Times August 27, 2009

The Upper Chattooga River will be open to boaters for the first time in more than three decades starting Dec. 1, 2009. The U.S. Forest Service released their final decision on managing recreation on the 57-mile river that runs from the headwaters near Cashiers down along the Georgia and South Carolina state lines.

Heard on the Ground

Bear Cables have been Installed!

The CMC bear cable crew has finished the installation of bear cables at all of our A.T. shelters.

CMC had a number of bear problems at some of our shelters in 2007 so we decided to install aerial food storage cables (bear cables) at all of our shelters. We received a grant from A.T. license plate money to cover the costs of equipment and materials and started installing them in March, 2008.

The first photo shows Piet Bodenhorst holding the ladder with Jeff Dektor starting the installation. The second shows a hiker lifting her pack on the completed cable at Roaring Fork shelter as we were leaving from putting up a second cable in the tent pad area.

All our A.T. shelters now have cables; the last one was at Hogback Ridge shelter. Frustrated bears and some hikers playing Tarzan have caused some damage but we are fixing them and strengthening them to prevent this from happening again. We have a very good system that the hikers like and will last for many years. Our next step is to install similar cables at our most used camping spots along the A.T. Howard McDonald.
