A Wilderness First Aid (WFA) will be offered on November 15-16 at the Blue Ridge Parkway's Destination Center. This hands-on, sixteen-hour course covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics for people who travel in the outdoors. Whether you are a hiker, maintainer, or leader, you want to be prepared for the unexpected. The Wilderness Medicine Institute of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) has a unique curriculum with topics that haven't been covered in classes previously offered through CMC. After these two days, you'll have the knowledge, skills and ability to make confident decisions in emergency situations.

Your cost is $55; the club will be covering half of your tuition. Tuition subsidy available only to those who were members as of August 7, 2008. Contact Cindy McJunkin at mcjfive@aol.com or 828-712-9646 for more details and to enroll.

MST Month - From the Asheville Citizen-Times Oct. 2, 2008

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY – Paula Robbins was nervous that the scarcity of gasoline would keep people from coming along on her hike last Sunday.

Robbins, a hike leader with the Carolina Mountain Club, was leading an autumn ramble on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail near Asheville. But instead of no-shows, she had a huge turnout — 26 hikers eager to carpool to the trailhead in search of fall wildflowers and mountain views.

“I think the Mountains-to-Sea Trail is really a treasure of the Asheville area,” Robbins said. “It’s so close to the center of population, that despite the gas shortage, people didn’t have to drive far for a nice wilderness experience.” For more about the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, see http://www.ncmst.org/

CMC Annual Dinner & Meeting - November 1, 2008

We are looking forward to a great turnout for the annual dinner. The last day of daylight savings was selected to give you a bit of extra daylight for youe trip to The Chariot in Hendersonville. Westgate will be used as a meeting place for those who may not wish to drive to Hendersonville.

Our guest speaker will be Adrienne Wallace, superintendent of the Chimney Rock State Park. She will be able to provide us with a glimpse into the future of the Park and the Hickory Nut Gorge area.

There will be a social hour with refreshments from 5 to 6 during which we will have a slide show running to acquaint you with the two new club challenges, the waterfall challenge and the fire tower challenge.

At 6 o'clock (dinner time) everyone will find something to eat from the buffet which will include a prime ribs carving board, chicken Marsala, and vegetarian lasagna. That will be followed by a short annual meeting
and Superintendent Adrienne Wallace.

Don't forget to send in your form for CMC membership renewal and annual dinner reservation. Barth Brooker.

Conservation

Grandfather Mountain, the 34th North Carolina State Park

The state of North Carolina has agreed to buy Grandfather Mountain's backcountry area. This is wonderful news for hikers. The 2,600 acres will comprise the state's newest park. The backcountry was already protected with conservation easements. It's the area that most of the 250,000 visitors never see.

Making that area a state park will ensure that it will even more protected. Hopefully, the State Park system will add new hiking trails as well. The state will pay $12 millions which is a bargain, considering that we paid over $20 millions for Chimney Rock Park.

The 604-acre tourist attraction which includes the Swinging Bridge will be taken over by a nonprofit corporation run by the Morton family. They say that nothing will change in that section. Now the state of North Carolina has 34 state parks. Danny

Can you Spot the Copperhead?

You may see this in the fall, when all the leaves drop on the ground near the privacy fence or the storage house and the underbrush gets crowded with leaves and limbs. Be careful when you rake those fall leaves. Bill Gupton

Can you spot the copperhead? Probably not. Scroll down to next pic

Here it is!
