News about eNews For the months of June through August I will be producing the biweekly eNews while the Bernsteins are on vacation. I am not as closely involved in the day-to-day activities of the club as is Danny. This means that I will need help in gathering items for the eNews. Please don't assume that if something important is happening that I know about it. Send me items for inclusion! Putting "eNews" in your email subject header will guarantee that your input will get prompt attention. Dave Wetmore, dwetmore@citcom.net ---------------------- Back to Top Happenings in the Next Two Weeks Learn About High-Pointing Douglas Butler, who has climbed the highest peaks in all 50 states, will be presenting a program at the Leicester Library (1561 Alexander Road, Leicester), on June 24th, at 7 PM. All are welcome. Please call the library (828-250-6480) for more information. Saturday Work Day Just a reminder that there will be an additional work day on June 21 to make up for the one rained out in May. Again we'll meet at the Moose Cafe at 8:00 for breakfast, leave promptly at 9:00, and be back by 3:00. Please let Les Love or Piet Bodenhorst know if you can attend. -------------------- Back to Top Annual Photo Contest
-- Photo by Stu English Effective immediately, you are invited to enter the club's new photo contest. The plan has been greatly simplified this year in that there are no categories, just a theme. And the contest will end March 31, 2009. Theme for the contest this year is "Defining the Carolina Mountain Club Experience", and members will select the top three winners at the Spring Social, April 25, 2009 after seeing a slide show of the best entries. The theme will permit a wide range of subject material as long as it defines the club experience. Rules:
Entries should be emailed to contestmcnabb@charter.net Our theme this time around is broad enough to permit almost any club-related image and could include vistas, forests, streams, waterfalls, close-ups, wildlife, flowers, the seasons, weather… even club meetings or events. Say in your email how your pictures relate to the theme, and on what occasion it was taken. Happy shooting. Plea to Hikers and Possible Hikers Please fill out and send in the hike survey that was in your latest Let's Go. The Hiking Committee wants to set up the kind of hikes you enjoy. They can do a better job if they know what you want. Plea to All CMC Members Please take a look at the award nomination form in your latest Let's Go. If you know of somebody whom you think is doing a good job, tell the Awards Committee. CMC Council's Position on permitting Firearms in The National Parks The Carolina Mountain Club council voted to support the Draft Appalachian Trail Conservancy's statement against the US Department of Interior's proposal to allow the carrying of firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges. Any CMC member wishing to express their opinion on the subject can do so by going to this web site. Search and Rescue Team The SAR Committee is in the planning stages and hopes to form a CMC SAR team. To see what they are doing and to get in on the action, read their report. Meet President Roosevelt I'm not quite sure how this is going to happen, but the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation has announced a reinactment of the Parkway dedication at which President Roosevelt will appear. Check it (and many other interesting things) out on their website. Do a Good Botanical Deed The ATC is holding two workshops on exotic/invasive plants. One will be on June 7th near Davenport Gap, the other on June 21 near Fontana. For imore information contact Leanna Joyner. Happy 75th Birthday!
