News about eNews For the months of June through August I will be producing the biweekly eNews while the Bernsteins are on vacation. I am not as closely involved in the day-to-day activities of the club as is Danny. This means that I will need help in gathering items for the eNews. Please don't assume that because something important is happening that I know about it. Send me items for inclusion! Putting "eNews" in your email subject header will guarantee that your input will get prompt attention. Dave Wetmore, dwetmore@citcom.net ---------------------- Back to Top What's Happening in the Next Two Weeks Local Book Signings Peter Barr will be signing copies of his book, Hiking North Carolina's Lookout Towers in Brevard and Asheville. On May 31 he will be in Brevard at Highland Books from 11:00 to 1:00 and the next day, June 1 he will be at Barnes & Noble in Asheville from 1:00 to 3:00.. For more information contact Peter Barr ---------------------- Back to Top ATC Stewardship Council The ATC Stewardship Council is the committee that manages the maintenance and protection of the A.T. Lenny Bernstein attended its last meeting. Read his report here. ---------------------- Back to Top Saturday Trail Maintenance Crew Start-up We are excited about starting a new Saturday trail crew for those of us who have week-day commitments, or those who just prefer Saturdays. This crew will probably do jobs that require more hiking. The second work/training day will be held on May 24 at the Fish Hatchery. Even if you would not be able to work every Saturday, but would like to be part of the crew when you can, you are invited to join us. Meet at Westgate at 8:45 to carpool, or at the Fish Hatchery at 9:30. Come dressed to work (don’t forget work gloves), bring lunch and water, and trail tools if you have them (we have extra tools). Let Becky Smucker bsmucker@charter.net know if you are coming and where you will meet us. Maintenance Workday Report We had 16 people show up to work last weekend, but got rained out at noon. We decided a make-up work day would be good, since we only make this effort at extending the MST 4 times a year. June 21 will be the next one, meeting again at the Moose Cafe at 8:00 for breakfast and leaving promptly at 9:00. Please let me know if that works for you. Thanks. ---------------------- Back to Top Backpacking Course Diamond Brand will be offering a free 8-week backpacking course continuing each Thursday night from June 7 to Jun 31. The course will be held at their Arden store and will be limited to 30 participants. The class will culminate with a 1-2 day overnighter in the Pisgah National Forest. To preregister, call 828-684-6262. Goodbye and Thank You! Please can I express my thanks to all the hike leaders and fellow hikers who I have met through the CMC during my time in North Carolina. I now leave for WI where I will spend the summer running my camp and hopefully getting to hike and ride some of the trails in the WI State Parks. I will always have the fondest memories of NC and especially my hikes with the CMC. You have made my time here very special and I feel privileged to have met you all and been able to share in the magic of the trails and scenery of the South. I am especially grateful for the hospitality and friendship you have all personally shown me. I will be returning to NC briefly in the autumn, but as many of you know, I have a 'long list' of places to see and visit before I am kicked out of the US next year! But, if timing works, I hope to be able to squeeze in another hike or two whilst back in Asheville. As who could resist a great hike, on great trails, with wonderful company! --Jude Wood ---------------------- Back to Top The eNews comes out on Fridays. So ... The next issue will come out on Friday, June 6th. This will allow the Sunday and Saturday hike leaders a little more time to send in their report; Wednesday hike reports for the hike just before the eNews comes out will be published in the next eNews. So send me your news and maintenance reports by Wednesday evening at 9 P.M. before the newsletter comes out, that is, by Tuesday evening, June 3rd to Dave Wetmore dwetmore@citcom.net Include your email address at the end of your story. Thank you. I can only accept the Wednesday hike report by Wednesday evening. The CMC Calendar is meant to answer the perennial question "When is this happening again?" It is also meant to prevent conflicts between competing CMC events. Please check it often. How to join the Carolina Mountain Club ---------------------- Back to Top |
