What's Happening in the Next Two Weeks

New (Temporary) eNews Editor

This will be my last eNews for a while. Lenny and I are taking a long trip and Dave Wetmore, dwetmore@citcom.net, has kindly consented to take over the eNews while I'm gone. Dave is an active hiker who has finished the SB6K, Pisgah 400 and Smokies 900. Dave and I have been working together for several weeks to insure a smooth transition. Please send all news, hike reports and other tidbits to Dave. Thank you. Danny

Saturday Trail Maintenance Crew Start-up

We are excited about starting a new trail crew to work regularly on Saturdays for those of us who have week-day commitments, or those who just prefer Saturdays. This crew will probably do jobs that require a little more hiking.

A planning/work/training day will be held on Saturday, May 17, at the Fish Hatchery. Even if you would not be able to work every Saturday, but would like to be part of the crew when you can, you are invited to join us. Meet at Westgate at 8:45 to carpool, or at the Fish Hatchery at 9:30. Come dressed to work (don’t forget work gloves), bring lunch and water, and trail tools if you have them. Let Becky Smucker bsmucker@charter.net know if you are coming and where you will meet us.

CMC Enters Public Comments on Blue Ridge Parkway Management Plan

In the last eNews we reported that work was underway to formulate a response from CMC regarding the proposed alternatives for the next Blue Ridge Parkway Management Plan. Our comments on the many points that we care about in the proposal were entered into the public record just under the wire on April 30.

The National Park Service has now extended the deadline to May 31.

It's not too late for you to send your own comments to them on their website at parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?parkID=355&projectId=10419&documentID=22597

Many thanks to Marianne Newman for her hard work in a short timeframe on this complex document, to those who responded to our request for input, and to Council for their consideration and authorization of the comments.

You will see this topic again when the National Park Service gets to the second public input phase of the process. Read our comments at (BRP management plan draft ) and relay further input to Becky Smucker at bsmucker@charter.net.

Guns in National Park Proposed Regulations

The Department of the Interior is proposing to change the regulations on guns in National Parks. Now, when you enter a National Park, your gun must be unloaded and stowed (in your trunk, for example). They are proposing to change this regulation to conform to state regulations. So in North Carolina, visitors would be able to carry concealed weapons or on their shoulder, if they want. The Department is looking for your input. Here's the formal announcement.

SUMMARY: The Department of the Interior, through the National Park Service and the Fish and Wildlife Service, proposes to amend regulations presently codified in 36 CFR part 2 and 50 CFR part 27, which provide guidance and controls for the possession and transportation of firearms in national park areas and national wildlife refuges. The proposed amendments would update the regulations to reflect current state laws authorizing the possession of concealed firearms, while maintaining the existing regulatory provisions that ensure visitor safety and resource protection such as the prohibitions on poaching and limitations on hunting and target practice.

DATES: Written comments will be accepted through June 30, 2008.

Go to edocket.access.gpo.gov/2008/E8-9606.htm for the full proposed regulation. Go to www.regulations.gov to enter your comment. Under "Comment or Submission", type E8-9606 to enter your comment. If you type "Guns in the Park", you'll find other people's comments. Danny

The Small Print

The eNews comes out on Fridays. So ... The next issue will come out on Friday, May 23 . This will allow the Sunday and Saturday hike leaders a little more time to send in their report; Wednesday hike reports for the hike just before the eNews comes out will be published in the next eNews.

So send me your news and maintenance reports by Tuesday evening at 9 P.M. before the newsletter comes out, that is, by Tuesday evening May 20, 2008 to Dave Wetmore at dwetmore@citcom.net. Include your email address at the end of your story. I can only accept the Wednesday hike report by Wednesday evening. Thank you.
