Other Important News

Spring Social a Great Success

The Annual Spring Social was a great success. The food was good, the companionship, warm and friendly, as usual, and the program was great. Becky Smucker had gotten together several members and former members who have been in the club for over 25 years. These included Nine Forbes who was president 1964-1965 - See the photo.

Bernard Elias joined the club in 1941 and has been an important part of CMC since then. Lewis and Jane Blodgett have been trail maintainers for over 30 years. Elizabeth and Heinz Feil joined CMC in 1963, the same year they emigrated from Germany. Tom Bindrim, the youngster of the group, insists that no hike is complete unless there's a bushwhack. Gerry McNabb, a member for 44 years, was president two separate times. John Keifer recalled how he was struck by lightning and lived to tell about it - at the dinner.

Look at more photos of the social by Jan Onan at http://www.carolinamtnclub.org/Photos.htm

I wonder what they'll have for a program next year. Danny.

Saturday Trail Maintenance Crew Start-up

We are excited about starting a new trail crew to work regularly on Saturdays for those of us who have week-day commitments, or those who just prefer Saturdays. This crew will probably do jobs that require a little more hiking.

A planning/work/training day will be held on Saturday, May 17, at the Fish Hatchery. Even if you would not be able to work every Saturday, but would like to be part of the crew when you can, you are invited to join us. Meet at Westgate at 8:45 to carpool, or at the Fish Hatchery at 9:30. Come dressed to work (don’t forget work gloves), bring lunch and water, and trail tools if you have them. Let Becky Smucker bsmucker@charter.net know if you are coming and where you will meet us.

May 1 Deadline for Blue Ridge Parkway Comments

The Blue Ridge Parkway is in the process of rewriting its management plan. Since the Parkway and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail beside it are so important to the CMC (not to mention near and dear to our hearts) we need to be informed and involved.

The first of two public comment periods is now open, and the National Park Service is soliciting input on its initial draft until May 1. We are in the process of putting together comments for Council to consider entering from the Club officially but the NPS needs to hear from us as individuals as well.

This is right in our backyard. Should the Parkway have more partnerships with commercial service providers? Do we need a paved, multi-purpose trail alongside the Parkway in urban areas like Asheville? Should the Craggy Pinnacle Trail be closed to protect sensitive habitat, and a new trail be built to Craggy Dome? Should the Buck Springs Lodge site be preserved? These and many more questions are raised in the plan draft.

If you like this planning stuff, or if you just care about the Parkway and want to help see that it’s taken care of, go to the NPS website at BRP Management Plan for information. There are links to the documents and .pdf files at the bottom of that first page. You will be most interested in the Comparison of Alternatives and Segments 5, 6, and 7 (Black Mountain, Asheville, and Pisgah). There is a form that you can print out for your comments, or you can send them in online. Becky Smucker, bsmucker@charter.net
