Volunteer for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Office

The Asheville office of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) seeks a dedicated volunteer for a minimum of seven days (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.) to work closely with ATC staff to update the regional directory. Ability to follow up with ATC partners by phone is required. The update will include a transition to a new format in Excel (and related data entry), synchronization with Outlook, and a final hard copy produced using Word; excellent computer skills are mandatory.

This is a great opportunity for someone who has an interest in learning more about the dynamic partnerships that make up the Appalachian Trail. Schedule is flexible for work between Feb. 1 – 15. A commitment to see the project through is firm. Volunteer will work at the ATC office, located in the Forest Supervisor’s Office for the National Forests of North Carolina building at 160 Zillicoa Street (just off Broadway, near I-26). Contact Leanna Joyner at (828) 230-5468 or ljoyner@appalachiantrail.org for more information or to volunteer.

Wind Turbines on Forest Service Land: Let the Forest Service Know Your Opinion

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 requires that the Department of the Interior approve projects on public lands with the capacity to generate at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity from non-hydropower renewable energy. The US Forest Service has issued new rules related to wind turbines on National Forest Service land. Comments are invited from the public by January 23.

The Federal Register notice and longer texts of the proposed changes are at www.fs.fed.us/recreation/permits/energy.htm.

The best places for wind turbines in WNC are on the ridge tops. The US Forest Service proposal could have direct impact on our trails via the visuals, the noise, and the roads required to install and maintain the turbines. As the price of oil increases and worldwide demand for more efficient energy increases, new energy technologies are being installed that don’t damage our limited and irreplaceable natural resources.

The Conservation Committee has spent a lot of hours researching and discussing this complex issue. On its recommendation, CMC Council voted to support wind turbines in the right places, and to support strong protections of special places. The full statement appears here.

Let the Forest Service know your opinion. Write to:

Director (630), Bureau of Land Management

Or go to the Federal eRulemaking Portal: www.regulations.gov and follow the instructions. Ruth Hartzler.

Heard on the Trail

A trip recommendation from Gerry McNabb

A friend of mine in Switzerland, who organizes and leads hikes, now has one scheduled for the Haute Provence region of France. If you are not going with some of our own members to hike the Pilgrimage Trail in France this year, here is an alternative group hike with a reliable native hiker. For details on the trip and its costs, see http://www.walkingtours.com/About-us.89.0.html. Gerry.
