Heard on the Trail

A letter from Arch Nichols to Art Loeb - [Look at those large numbers.]

As part of some research I'm doing, I found this handwritten note referring to the joint CMC/Smoky Mountain Hiking Club hike.[Note courtesy of Joan Loeb Dickson]

10/24/1966
Art –
Hope you saw the article in Monday Citizen with Knoxville dateline about the joint hike.

There were about 530 participants in all (I was #464 at the Andrews Bald trail junction and #100 at Buckeye Gap) with 221 all the way thru. Ernie Dickerman had a wonderfully organized trip and it was a pretty hike and quite enjoyable.

I tabulated 41 CMC’ers counting Tom Reese and one unidentified young couple whom I didn’t get to see on the Trail (they came out earlier and asked Zeffie about transportation where she was waiting at Elkmont). 21 of ours went all the way thru. I met friends from PATC, RATC, GATC and, of course, SMHC was there in force – wonderful participation.
Did you and Keith get to register on the trail route with the clockers (??). I haven’t seen many of our bunch who backtracked to know if they saw you or anyone else that I don’t know about for the CMC hike report.

Regards
Arch
