Conservation

What is going on in Hazel Creek?
The following shows that the most important conservationists are the hikers who actually walk the trails.

Hazel Creek Trail in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is located in the middle of the most extensive roadless area in the eastern United States.
So what do most Hazel Creek Trail campsite squatters and New York City street vendors have in common? Answer: Those wheeled carts which carry everything, including the proverbial kitchen sink! Read about the mutilation of Hazel Creek.

These two article originally appeared in the Smoky Mountain News, a weekly news magazine covering Haywood, Jackson, Macon and Swain counties, on November 6, 2006.

Heard on the Trail

Look at these pictures!

From Danny:

These photos have been circulating on the web and I thought they were literary breathtaking. It's a long way down there.I think this is in China, but not sure.

And I was concerned because the bridges on the Indian Creek Trail had lost their bannisters. (See the hike report for the Nov. 19 hike.)
