Just done last quarter as a
Sunday hike, this all‑over‑5000' MST section is one of the
prettiest anywhere, with lots of Fraser fir and red spruce, beech and sedge,
birch, rhodos & ferns, and a side trip to Mt. Hardy. Mostly in Middle Prong
Wilderness, so reservations needed for ten lucky hikers. Topo: SR‑MP
Wilderness Area or Sam Knob. Hunting Season; wear blaze orange. Meeting place and time will be given by
hike leader when you call for reservations.

A steady 3.1 mile climb up to
the 3,969 ft. summit (elevation gain 1,369 ft.) with magnificent views of
Pisgah Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Optional 20 minute walk to the North
Face viewpoint on our descent for another wonderful view. Meeting place: Pisgah Ranger Station on Rt. 276. Topo: Shining
Rock.

Rd. to Yellow Mtn. Gap, and then along an open ridge on the AT to Hump
Mountain, a grassy bald at 5,587 ft. Great views of the Highlands. Meeting place: Rose’s Parking Lot, south
end. 25/70 Weaverville Exit, turn right (east) at ramp end, left at first

recently named Penny Rock, have lunch, and continue to the Wagon Road Gap
Overlook. Plenty of rest stops on this hike! Meeting Place: Cold Mountain Overlook, where Hwy. 276 crosses Blue
Ridge Parkway.

After a few years absence,
we’ll again do a traditional pre‑Thanksgiving hike. This time it will
include several innovations, the Doug Stirling trail to Wolf Mtn. overlook, and
Long Rocks to the Jim Redd trails, with lunch on Eagle Rock, overlooking
Pinnacle Mountain. A nice moderate trek.
First meeting place: Rear of Mountain Bank, corner of White St. & Rt. 25
South, Hendersonville. Second meeting point: Kanuga Conference Center, lower
parking lot (rear of Inn at 9:15 AM).

to Devils Fork Gap

Hike from the Fork Ridge Trail
head to Devil Fork Gap, following NC/TN border for 8.8 miles on the AT. Climb
about 1,800 ft. Most of the climb is on the Fork Ridge Trail. We should enjoy
good views going over Big Butt and will pass the Shelton Family grave site. Car
shuttle will be necessary. Meeting
place: Westgate Shopping Center

hike to the Pisgah Inn. Lunch on the
back porches of the Inn’s motel for a pre‑Christmas celebration. Bring a
few homemade goodies to share. As a special treat the leader will provide info
on the historical significance of our cookie hikes, which began in December
1988. A side trip up Frying Pan Mtn.
may be included. First meeting place:
Ingle’s, Rt. 25 North, Hendersonville. Second meeting point: Cold Mountain
Overlook at Wagon Road Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Hwy. 276, at 10:15 AM.
