Looking Back....
Leader: Bill Newton
Date: Friday, July 1
Purpose: Fix Bridge
Location: Big Creek Trail
People: 11

Summary: Today we worked primarily on the bridge over
Fletcher Creek at the Hendersonville Reservoir, which is the beginning of the
Big Creek Trail. The bridge had washed out from the fall storms, and was very
dangerous to cross. The hand rail was completely gone, and the two foot logs
were badly askew. We realigned the foot logs, replaced the hand rail and
repaired the damage to the bridge abutments. We installed two hand rails
approaching the bridge and reworked the tread leading down to the bridge. We
also sent two saws and two weedeaters up the trail to remove several blow downs
and clear some annual growth. A few water bars were installed and existing ones
cleared. More work is needed on stream crossings on up the trail. We will get
back to Big Creek Trail soon to complete this work. Bill Newton CMC Pisgah
Friday Crew
Leader: Skip Shelton
Date: Friday, July 1
Purpose: Move Logs
Location: AT
People: 11
Summary: Moved the last 12 logs down the hill and
continued work on the tent pads. This completes moving all the logs and other
building materials down the hill. Jim Bloom worked hard on the tent pads and
made good progress on them. Work Needed: When Howard’s shelter building crew is
done with their construction, we will go back for one day to haul all the
construction stuff up the hill, brush in the log trail, and repair the AT
crossing we made to move the logs across it. There is still some work to do to
complete the tent pads and we will work on those that day also. Don’t anticipate
doing this work till mid to late Fall.
Leader: John Pawcio
Date: Saturday, July 2
Purpose: Weedeating
Location: MST
People: 5
Summary: We gave it a good try, but did not manage to
clear the trail all the way to Ivestor gap intersection - John Plaxico said we
were less than 1/2 mile to it when a bolt of lightening hit about 4 inches
behind me - well it sounded like it anyway. We ran 4 weedeaters back to back and
managed to clear around a mile in about 4 1/2 hours. Adding an hour travel each
way that's 6.5 hrs total X 5 for a total of 32.5 hrs today. DR Kulp, Ed
Hauschild, John Pawcio, Bud Haas and me. John hopes to go back and finish by
himself if need be soon, and Ed plans to work his section soon. I'm going to the
south pole. Bill
Leader: Barth Brooker
Date: Monday, July 4
Purpose: Down Trees/Weedeating
Location: MST
People: 4
Summary: I intended to remove a couple of trees on
the upper part of Douglas Falls trail, but Jorge just hiked the trail and said
the upper part was clear. However, we did remove a tree which was blocking the
MST below the Craggy Visitor Center. A tree was removed from between Bee Tree
Gap and Potato Field and another removed from just above the Folk Arts Center
(the last two reported by Roy Smucker and Jim Bloom, respectively). Also did
some weed eating, tread work, and water bar cleaning between Craggy Garden and
the Douglas Falls Trail Junction.
Leader: John Soldati
Date: Wed, June 29
Purpose: Down Trees
Location: AT-Big Bald to Spivey Gap
People: 3
Summary: Big day today with very
small crew. We appreciate Don Christensen "swamping" for both sawyers today
as Jorge took on seven of the trees down north of Bald Mt. Shelter over
toward Whispering gap, while I hit the first monster of a forked huge old
chestnut (it appeared). The base of this old tree, thankfully off the main
treadway had to be greater that 80 inches in diameter and the boles we cut
were well close to 30 inches...but not known in the Piet's email from Bruce
Bente's information that this was a "forked" tree with a double large (22
inches) on one of the forks. A two and half hour job on this one and
without Don's and Jorge's help, the large cut pieces would still be there.
The trail down into the woods from B. Stamp is
not good as water is running streight down unabated; further below prior to
and after (northbound) the A.T. is need of much repair and water diversion.
No major evidence of string trimming in the woods section north of the
shelter...blazes are in good shape. Good day despite light showers, heavy
fog to start...glad we went to work. Thanks guys...Official report
follows. JS
Leader: Skip Shelton
Date: Friday, June 24
Purpose: Logs
Location: AT-Shelter Site
People: 5
Summary: Moved
8 more logs down the hill and continued work on the trail to the tent pads
Work Needed: There are 12
logs left to move down the hill. We think we can move 3 logs on some trips
and finish up this job in
one more day (July 1st).
We will then need another trip to this area to brush in the log trail, fix
the AT crossing and complete the tent pad work. Howard and his crew will
need a number more workdays to complete the shelter.
Leader: Mike Lang
Date: Monday, June 27
Purpose: Various
Location: MST-Ox Creek, Rattlesnake Lodge
People: 4
Summary: Removed all trees.
Cleaned waterbars. Repaired wet areas. Lopping.
Leader: Bill Newton
Date: Friday, June 24
Purpose: Various
Location: AT-Sams Gap
People: 9
Summary: With nine workers, we worked the AT Friday from Rice
Gap to Sams Gap. We drove into Rice Gap (getting to be a bit of an adventure
in itself) and dropped 5 workers off there. Using 4 weedeaters, loppers and
a chain saw, we cleared the entire section and the short piece from Sams up
the hill north to the woods. We found lots of weedeating to do, two small
blowdowns and more touch-up sawing. This section is in good condition now.
Bill Newton
Leader: John Soldati
Date: Wed, June 22
Purpose: Various
Location: AT-J. Meadows
People: 7
Summary: We had an original small
crew today but beefed up with very honorable visitors and trail greats:
Carol and Ken Deal and Mr. Sherman Stambaugh (an original). We had with us
Bill Carr, Charlie, Jorge and the driver.
We asked too much of a small crew but got the
work done pretty well. Cleaned 101 water bars from Jones Meadow down to Log
Cabin Road...string trimmed and steel bladed the top of the A.T. from J.
Meadow around for three quarters of a mile; removed one dangerous fallen
snag close to the junction of J. Meadow feeder trail (left all the fallen
trees on the feeder trail to discourage pilgrims and ATV people). Steel
bladed up from L. Cabin Rd. about three quarters of a mile, taking out small
trees, friars and weeds, especially up high and above the steps. Little
Laurel Shelter is in need of a new privy and privy sign. There is no log
book or pencil in the shelter as well. The spring is doing OK...not the
best...could use some work to make a "bowl" or something. Trail needs some
sidehilling just before and after Little Laurel Shelter...southbound. A
good day, met a Marine on the trail hiking to Maine with his son...so a very
good day...We will miss our Wednesday Crew resident biker, Bill Carr as he
makes his way and an adventure to Alaska for the next five to six weeks. We
wish him well, God's speed and care, and hope that he keeps the two wheels
with the rubber side down! Take care Bill. We also miss Mr. Bair and hope
that Bob and Don can return for next weeks adventure in the woods of North
Carolina. Good day guys and thanks. JS
PS: If anyone on the Wed. Crew wants to sweat a
little, the Buccaneers are going out to Street Gap to do some "pride" work
and prepare for a Wednesday's session with long logs "pre-cut" to put in on
the first slope northbound. There will be some string trimming as
well...fun city. Just REPLY...we are meeting at 8:30 AM Friday morning in
WEAVERVILLE (NC). J

Forest Service guidelines for creating the new "Rolling grade
Dips"
Check out these sites. They show in detail the
construction of a "rolling grade dip" which is the way we propose to drain
out trails where possible in the future. Done properly it will drain the
water, hardly be noticeable, and be self cleaning, preventing the annual
cleaning of water bars. Bill Newton
Diverting surface water off the trail should be near the top
of your list of priorities. Running water erodes tread and support
structures and can even lead to loss of the trail itself. Standing water
often results in soft boggy tread or tread and support structure failure.
Water is wonderful stuff--just keep it off the trail.
The very best drainage structures are those designed and
installed during the original construction. These include outsloping the
tread and grade dips. We've already discussed outsloping. Let's move on to
the next best drainage choice, grade or drain dips. The classic mark of good
drainage is that it is self maintaining, requiring minimal care.
