CMC E-News- Special Edition Southern Highlands 2005 July 13, 2005 |
Perfect side hill construction and not a foot of wasted effort. A trail so good that there is no need for water bars. This high praise came from Ken Honick, Treasurer of ATC describing the CMC section of the A.T. at the A.T.C. biannual meeting. Ken had walked the southern region of the A.T. and commented on the different maintenance methods of the five clubs in the "Deep South". As the battle raged on as to the proper pronunciation of "Appalachia" between the Northern and Southern clubs, we hiked, went on excursions and attended workshops. See pictures of CMC members at work and play at the conference. At the week-long meeting, the A.T.C. got a new name (Appalachian Trail Conservancy), a new tag line (Join the Journey) and a new logo. See the Appalachian Trail Conservancy website. We have a lot of expertise in CMC. Several members gave workshops:
38 CMC Volunteers Help Make the 35th Biennial Meeting of the ATC a Rousing Success The five AT Maintaining Clubs that make up the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s Deep South Region have been working together for more than two years to organize the ATC’s 35 the Biennial Meeting, which was held on July 1-8 at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. The meeting attracted 850 registrants, and all seemed pleased with the quality and quantity of events that were offered. As one of the organizing clubs, CMC was a member of the meeting Steering Committee, and took responsibility for organizing the 60 workshops and 30 excursion that were offered during the meeting. In addition, CMC members led many of the hikes that were a major feature of the meeting. Special thanks go to Howard McDonald and Lenny Bernstein who represented CMC on the Steering Committee. In addition, Howard organized all of the workshops, and Lenny organized all of the excursions and the staffing of the workshop and excursion desk that was part of the meeting registration area. Special thanks also go to Jack Fitzgerald and Bruce Bente who organized CMC’s portion of the hike schedule. We thank the following CMC members volunteered as workshop presenters, excursion or hike leaders, worked at the workshop and excursion desk, or participated in some other fashion at the meeting itself. Many volunteered for more than one activity. Our apologies if we missed anyone who volunteered.
