VOTE FOR THE NEW DUES SCHEDULE ON NOV 6!!

We are a lot more than just a local walking club. Since the beginning we have been involved with the development and maintenance of the Appalachian Trail and, more recently, with the Mountains to Sea Trail. These involvements give us both regional and national eminences that forever make us a part of larger forces. The concept of lengthy recreational trails has come about only in the last century and when that began to happen, we were there to make local, on-the-ground suggestions and improvements. We continue to mark, maintain and improve these trails as part of our heritage. Because we a part of a team of clubs that enjoy these privileges, we have a responsibility to be financially viable. It is for this reason that I support the dues increase recommended by the Board. We must do our part to remain strong and stand tall for continued involvement with our ever growing trails systems. CMC Members Foot/Ankles Workshop at Diamond Brand Nov 30th

Reservation Required

Do you ever wonder why your legs get sore at the beginning and sometimes throughout your time on the trail? One reason is that we spend the majority of our time on flat earth. Because of the fact, we have developed an instability in our foot and ankle biomechanics. Simple put, we are not standing on a solid foundation. If this is a concern of yours and you would like to know how you might change the stability of your foot and ankle, we invite you to join us to discuss “Active Ankles.” Southeastern Fitness and Rehabilitation (SEFR) and Diamond Brand Outfitters (DBO) are hosting this educational clinic on Tuesday, November 30th. The clinic will begin between 7:00pm and will be hosted at DBO. DBO is located in Arden on Hendersonville Road, about a mile south of the Airport Rd/ Hendersonville Rd intersection. Food and drinks will be provided (not a sit down dinner). There will be 2 speakers:

Wesley Miller (PT of SEFR) will be briefly discussing ankle anatomy and the importance of having a strong and balanced ankle.

David Burns (Head of Footwear at DBO) will teach us about wearing proper footwear on the trail and on the street and how this pertains to injury prevention.

Both speakers encourage questions and discussions following the talks. Between food, speakers, and discussion, the clinic will run about 1 ˝ hours or less. There will be discounts on footwear and door prizes for those who attend.

We hope that with a little knowledge and a few simple exercises for the fall and Winter seasons, you will see the miles fly by underfoot! We hope to see you there! Matt McLean Marketing Director @ Southeastern Fitness and Rehabilitation

Email donwalton@bellsouth.net for a reservation. Limited seating. Reserve before Nov 25.

Hot Springs to line streets with "AT" symbol!

The city of Hot Springs has received a grant to redo some of the old sidewalks in town. In conjunction with this, cement blocks with an "AT" symbol embedded will be strategically constructed in some of the sidewalks to create a walking trail around town and also to show where the AT goes through town.

Exploring the Ancient Blue Ridge. October 23, 2004 10:00 am-1:00 p.m Blue Ridge Parkway at Mt. Pisgah

The beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains developed over millions of years. These are some of the oldest mountains on earth. You are invited to join National Parks Conservation Association, Western North Carolina Alliance and Dr. J. Dan Pittillo, biologist with Western Carolina University, as we explore Flat Laurel Gap, a unique site that provides information on the past 12,000 years of paleo-ecological history and the ancient plants and animals, many of which still exist here at Mt. Pisgah.

The walk will be followed by a brown bag lunch discussion with Greg Kidd, Associate Regional Director for NPCA. Greg will discuss the opportunities and challenges that present themselves in preserving the views, vistas, ecology and visitor's experience of these ancient mountains, as the Parkway's first General Management and Transportation Implementation Plan are developed this fall. For more information and to make a reservation, please call Emily Jones in the Southeast regional office (865) 329-2424 extension 21 or email southeast@npca.org. Our NPS law enforcement partners need your club's help with a couple of law enforcement issues.

First, they are asking for assistance in finding a stolen vehicle taken from an A.T. trailhead near Erwin, TN. They believe it will or has already been abandoned at an A.T. trailhead south of Erwin, TN. Here's some information on the vehicle:

1997 Red Nissan Pathfinder SUV North Carolina license plate = NZX9070

If anyone in your club were to spot this car, please contact:

911

Ranger Todd Remaley @ (301) 639-0167 cell @ (717) 258-5771 x205 office @ todd_remaley@nps.gov

Investigator Steve Southworth @ (434) 989-7607 cell @ (540) 471-3144 office

The NPS would like to learn of this ASAP, so we encourage your folks to try contacting 911 or the names listed ASAP if you have any information.

*********

Secondly, they are looking for information on the whereabouts of an A.T. hiker who they believe to be linked to several stolen cars (the car mentioned above and 2 others recovered at A.T. trailheads south of where they were stolen from). This individual was last seen on the A.T. south of the Nolichucky River and is wanted for questioning in Virginia and there also have been two arrest warrants issued for him. Here's some information on the individual:

Trail name = "Saved" Real name = David Lescoe Age = 33 Height = approximately 6' Weight = approximately 160 pounds Physical description = White male with dark hair, possibly a dark beard, and tatoos on the wrist, arms, shoulders, and calf

He is known to carry knives but is not considered dangerous. He should NOT be alerted to the fact that he is being saught as he is considered a flight risk. He is believed to be carrying stolen camping gear. Please observe items (i.e. clothing, boots, camping gear, etc.) in his possession and if possible, document him with his gear in a photo. Be sure NOT to alert him to why you're taking his picture.

**********

Please pass this message on to your club folks and ask them to report any information they might have ASAP to 911 or the same contacts above. We'd like to catch this guy, remove him from the trail, and let the authorities prosecute.

Thanks, ATC -- Matthew Davis ATC Associate Regional Representative for Ga., N.C., and Tenn.
